History

The association was founded in London in August 2003 by a number of Nigerian Registered Psychiatric Nurses in a rather informal gathering. This group later visited Houston, Texas, USA in November 2003 to initiate strategies to liaise with colleagues across the world and develop the Modus operandi to achieve the goals of the association.

Guided by principle of self-determination, they united actively to pursue a positive focus to improve all facets of mental health care services in Africa. Their goal was to positively impact upon mental health of mother Africa with possible effect upon the mental health of Black communities across the globe.

The International Association for Psychiatric Nurses is growing from a handful of professionals into a global organization of over 1500 members.
